Infertility Q & A
How long do I have to wait to get help for infertility?
Trying to get pregnant may seem like fun at first, but going months without a positive pregnancy test can tax your relationship. Dr. Hudson recommends you schedule an infertility evaluation if:
- You’ve been trying to get pregnant for 12 months without success
- You’ve been trying for six months without success and you’re over 35
- You’ve had more than one miscarriage
There are many different reasons why you may be having a difficult time getting pregnant. For women, the most common cause is irregular ovulation. Age and lifestyle choices may also affect your ability to conceive.
What can I expect during an infertility evaluation?
To determine what may be causing your infertility, Dr. Hudson conducts a thorough examination, which may include a physical and pelvic exam, review of your medical and family history, lab work, and diagnostic testing.
Lab work may include blood and urine analyses to assess hormone levels and other markers that help Dr. Hudson determine if changes in ovulation may be causing your infertility.
Diagnostic tests may include:
Ultrasound
An ultrasound is a noninvasive test that uses soundwave technology to generate images of your reproductive organs. Dr. Hudson may recommend this procedure to get a better look at your fallopian tubes to see if there’s a blockage.
Hysterosalpingography
Hysterosalpingography is a special X-ray that allows Dr. Hudson to see the anatomical structure of your reproductive organs in detail.
What type of workup will my partner need?
To get the best picture of what may be causing your issues with conception, Dr. Hudson also evaluates your partner for infertility. The evaluation may include:
- Semen sample for analysis
- Assessment of hormone levels
- Review of medical and family history
If necessary, Dr. Hudson may refer your partner to a specialist for additional testing, such as diagnostic imaging or a testicular biopsy.
What treatments are available to treat my infertility?
Treatment for your infertility depends on the cause. Dr. Hudson works one on one with you to develop a treatment plan to improve your chances of conception.
Treatment may include:
- Medication to increase ovulation
- Surgery to correct an anomaly that may be preventing pregnancy, such as a fibroid
- Lifestyle changes to improve health habits
Dr. Hudson also offers intrauterine insemination (IUI), where she places healthy semen directly into your uterus close to ovulation to increase chances of pregnancy.
